Colombia, located in South America between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, is steeped in history even stronger than its coffee beans. Despite past turbulence, including notable events in the 20th century such as the ’80s drug trade boom and the subsequent efforts for peace, Colombia remained resilient and vibrant. This nation of diverse landscapes and passionate people shares borders with Brazil, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela.

Beyond its historical narrative, Colombia is the birthplace of international talents such as Shakira and Maluma. And, the country is known for incredible salsa dancing (particularly in Cali).

Colombia’s climate varies from tropical along the coast to cooler inland, resulting in beautiful and diverse ecosystems.

Tourists to Colombia typically begin in the capital, captivated by Medellin’s Comuna 13. Once marred by violence, the neighborhood has transformed into a cultural landmark where visitors can witness its vibrant street art and resilient community spirit.

Over the years, Colombia has evolved from an off-the-beaten-track backpacker destination to a hotspot for digital nomads, with Medellin at its forefront. In late 2022, the country approved the Colombia digital nomad visa, cementing its appeal to remote workers seeking adventure and affordability.

Furthermore, Colombia’s reputation as a retirement haven is on the rise, thanks to its welcoming atmosphere and affordable cost of living. Tourists flock to marvel at the breathtaking landscapes, from the verdant coffee fields of Salento to the majestic peaks of Cocora Valley. Medellin, in particular, stands out for its increasingly impressive infrastructure, reflecting the nation’s progress.

Despite its tumultuous past, Colombia has upheld democracy, preserving stability for its citizens and visitors alike. With each passing year, interest in visiting or experiencing life there increases, resulting in a need for a sustainable mindset when researching your visit or move.
