Europe is the continent that I have called home since 2018. It is rich in history and culture, and, in comparison to the United States, incredibly advanced in terms of the social infrastructure and support systems for its people. Although there are dozens of countries whose borders intersect on the continent, one of the most striking elements as an American living here for over half a decade is how people here tend to think simultaneously so much more globally and locally than Americans. This paradox is key to both approaching travel and life in Europe, because the American paradox is that we are simultaneously too in the moment and yet never present.
Of course, depending on where you visit, the “European experience” will hugely differ. That is to say, there is no universal European experience, because the countries are all very distinct from one another.

Girona, Spain, is not typically one of the first places to come to mind when Americans think about Spain. That’s one of the things I love most about traveling, though. Hi! I'm a current US expat and longtime traveler based in Strasbourg, France. I'm here because I fell in love with a Frenchie, and I think and write a lot about the identity implications of loving someone so much that you make lasting changes for them. But that's just part of my story. I have deep backpacker-adventure roots and love hiking and sports, including running, horseback riding, and soccer. In recent years, I've also developed a taste for slow city travel and never take for granted an opportunity to explore a new place and indulge in a delicious meal. Finally, I am also an enormous animal enthusiast and adore opportunities to safely and responsibly interact with them. Nothing puts this complex and beautiful world we all share more into perspective than being in nature.
